Elders' Institute e-News

June 27, 2006

Welcome to the Elders' Institute e-News
Welcome to the May/June 2006 issue of the Elders' Institute e-News.

In this issue we will ask you to share your insight as a ruling elder and give you a little update on the PAW 2006 event.

Elders' Corner
"Elders, We seek your wisdom!" is the title on a series of scenarios where we would like to hear your suggestions to what action an elder should take in a particular situation. There are no trick questions and there is most likely not one but several good suggestions.

Please visit the "Elders' Corner" on our web site where you can read about the scenarios and submit your answer, or download the scenarios, take them to your session for further discussion, and then submit your answer.

Let's hear from you!

Pre-Assembly Workshops 2006—a successful day
The Elders' Institute held its 4th annual Pre-Assembly Workshops on June 3, 2006, at Knox Presbyterian Church, St. Catharines, with 82 ruling elders attending. Workshops, the morning and afternoon worship services, even the 131 seconds workouts (!), were received very positively, both in the formal evaluation forms and in the informal comments made by participants.

Prizes, $25 gift certificates for any Elders' Institute online course or publication, were given to a number of participants as follows:

  • Coming from furthest east: Susan Templeton, St. John's, NL.
  • Coming from furthest west: Lorraine Whiting, Knox, Victoria & Merrilyn Jones, St. Andrew's, Nanaimo, BC.
  • First person registered and paid: Marian Robinson, Gloucester Church, Ottawa, ON.
  • Congregation with the most registrants (9): Ghanaian Presbyterian Church, Toronto, ON.

At General Assembly
During the week of General Assembly—around the display table and at the mealtimes—discussions with elders from all over the country gave us insight and knowledge about what is happening in Presbyterian churches, near and far. It is wonderful to hear so many stories and how many elders found "common ground" in their calling during these moments together.

PAW 2007
The Pre-Assembly Workshops 2007 are now being planned and will take place in the Waterloo-Wellington Presbytery on Saturday, June 2, 2007 with the theme

Stop. Believe. Go.
