Welcome to the Elders' Institute e-News

In this issue we will tell you what EI's director, Roberta Clare, is doing this summer and highlight our next online course.

Roberta's Excellent Adventure
Roberta begins her "excellent adventure" to the Maritimes on August 18. She will be travelling in a camper to small, rural communities in New Brunswick to lead workshops for ruling elders and lay leaders on evangelism, pastoral visiting and finding/keeping volunteers. Roberta will be making a brief stop in Halifax. She is available for coffee at Tim Hortons or a restaurant of your choice as she travels through your area. Call the EI office toll-free at 1-866-794-8888 to set a time and place.

Reading the Hebrew Bible With New Eyes
This new EI online course is ideally suited for group Bible study, so round up your session members to take this course. Remember, six can register for the price of five! Whether you're part of a group or an individual, this is a great opportunity for a disciplined six-week Bible study.

The Bible is full of stories, songs, poems and letters that were written, collected and preserved by ancient writers to give witness to their faith in God. This course will introduce the Old Testament by exploring the ways these ancient writers expressed their faith and the context in which they lived.

Reading the Hebrew Bible With New Eyes will engage participants in a careful reading of biblical passages in order to build reading skills to appreciate the artistry and content of the words of Scripture. Our study will also help participants understand the breadth and diversity of biblical faith. We'll consider such key theological issues as the nature of God, the nature of human beings and the relationship between God and humans.

September 15 to October 24, 2008
Instructors: Pat Dutcher-Walls and Paddy Eastwood
