In 1560, the Scottish National Assembly led by John Knox adopted a Reformed Confession of Faith and declared the independence of the Church of Scotland. Thus began the Presbyterian tradition.
Recognizing this important anniversary, The Elder’s Institute of St. Andrew’s Hall, in collaboration with Peregrinatio Studies Inc.,is offering a 17-day pilgrimage to France, Switzerland and Scotland, in October 2010, to explore the roots and development of the Reformed tradition and reflect upon its meaning for church leadership in the 21st century. The pilgrimage will begin in Paris, September 30, 2010 and conclude in Glasgow, October 16. Participants will explore, through site visits, presentations, readings and singing, the origins of evangelical Reformation in the region north of Paris in the 1520’s. Then the group will move to Strasbourg and Geneva, to experience the birth and unfolding of the Reformed tradition through the ministry of Martin Bucer and John Calvin in those two cities. While in Geneva, the pilgrims will visit the headquarters of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches at the Ecumenical Centre, also site of the World Council of Churches.
Flying to Glasgow, the pilgrimage will explore the roots of the Celtic Christian tradition on the isle of Iona, off the west coast. Returning to Edinburgh, pilgrims will join in the 450th anniversary celebration at St. Giles High Kirk. They will experience worship and communion as they were celebrated four centuries ago in Duddingston Kirk, Edinburgh’s oldest church still in use. We shall explore the renewal of Presbyterian church life, worship and governance in the 19th century. Finally, the pilgrimage will encounter the ministry of the contemporary Iona community amongst the poor and unchurched of Glasgow.
