Workshops
Planning
The Elders’ Institute recommends that you follow the process below in planning a workshop, training event or retreat:
- Who will attend the workshop? Is this a workshop exclusively for your session, several sessions from churches in the presbytery or synod, ruling elders and lay leaders or everybody (ruling and teaching elders, lay leaders and pew folk)?
- Organize a planning team. If your event is open to other congregations and presbyteries, make sure there is representation from each participating congregation. This helps to build support for the event.
- The planning team chooses two or three dates and contacts the Elders’ Institute to book the event.
- What are the needs of the people who will attend the workshop? Ask the planning team to survey each congregation – what is the greatest challenge they face? Suggest the list of workshops the Elders’ Institute offers. Each workshop is shaped and adapted according to the needs and special requests provided by the planning team.
- Discuss the survey results with the Elders’ Institute. The EI staff and planning team will draft the agenda.
- If the workshop will be attended by one or more sessions, forward information about each congregation to the Elders’ Institute. This will help us shape the workshop to the unique character of each congregation. Information pertinent to the workshop may include newsletters, annual reports, special projects and mission projects.
- Confirm the travel itinerary with the Elders’ Institute staff.
